Recently, I was looking back at the titles to several pieces that I wrote in 2024, hoping to find something that I would like to share with you. It's a Gift, I Think caught my eye. Much time and effort went into this short poem. I wanted the words and rhymes to be just so.
It's a Gift, I Think covers some (but certainly not all!) of the feelings that writers may experience. The feeling that what you're writing is stupid and that no one will ever want to read it. The fear of criticism. The confusion over why we're so drawn to writing (I'm not the only one who marvels at that, am I?). The desire to make a difference with the words that we are given.
Here are those feelings, fears, and desires, arranged in rhyme:
It's a Gift, I Think
Written by Lilyana Page
"It's stupid!" I say, "I can't write anything worth reading today."
Yet, again I pick up my pen, determined to get this right one day.
Some days I'm not quite sure if there's any talent involved,
Or if I'm just extremely stubborn and resolved.
I've a fascination with the written word,
And a desire to know that my words are heard.
I've a hope that someday, someone, somewhere
Will be positively impacted by the words I choose to share.
It's a gift, I think, this yearning for ink.
